What are cannabinoids?

Phytocannabinoids or cannabinoids as they are more commonly known, are terpenophenolic structures which originate from the cannabis plant. They are formed from the convergence of two synthetic pathways in the plant. The cannabinoid precursors, olivetolic acid (OA) and geranyl pyrophosphate (GPP), are synthesized from the cytosolic polyketide and the plastidic DOXP/MEP pathways respectively. They undergo further chemical changes, depending on the enzymes present (strain dependent) to result in a signature chemical profile.

Currently up to 101 have been characterized from the cannabis plant, many of them having their own pharmacological effects.
