The seeds of the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa) are known to be extremely nutritious. Hemp seeds have a good ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids – which is 3:1. They are also rich in naturally occurring vitamin E compounds. Hemp seed contain 25-35% protein, and contain all the essential amino acids. A high percentage of the carbohydrate content is insoluble and soluble fiber. Our hemp nutritional testing is able to quantify these components.

Hemp seeds have the potential to be incorporated into various foods, as well as consumed on their own. Shelled hemp seeds can be added to baked goods, cereals and granola bars. Hemp oil (made from pressing seed) can be used in cooking. Hemp protein can used as a supplement or added to smoothies.

Hemp nutritional panel

We offer conclusive hemp nutritional testing that can be used for labeling.

Our hemp nutritional testing includes adheres to the mandatory food standard code requirements. The parameters are Energy, Total Fat, Saturated Fat, Protein, Carbohydrate, Sugars and Sodium. We also measure ash and moisture.

We also have the capability of analyzing the fatty acid profile of hemp food products to determine the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio of fatty acids in the product.

Fibre content

We are able to quantify the fibre content of hemp foods.

Fibre is the indigestible component of plant foods, and is a important component of food which keeps our digestive systems healthy. Fibre is classified as soluble or insoluble, and are found in varying proportions in foods. They are important in causing a sense of satiety, helping to stay and feel full. Soluble fibre also plays a part in lowering cholesterol and stabilizing blood glucose levels.

In addition to our nutritional panel, our hemp nutrition testing includes the quantification of fibre. We have two tests available: the quantification of total dietary fibre (Enzymatic AOAC method, as well as a fibre screen (measuring Total, Soluble and Insoluble fibre).

Other parameters in food

We have the capability of testing other parameters of interest on request.

Quite often extra information is required by regulatory bodies such as FSANZ, state and local councils where food is sold, for verification. This includes testing for allergens and other impurities which would be information vital for consumers. We also perform testing on cannabinoids (total THC and total CBD) in food.

We have significant method development capabilities available, particularly with our experienced chemists, to develop methods for specific compound requests. Our ability to navigate various matrices to pull out compounds of interest makes us strong at catering to specific requests in hemp nutritional testing.
